Charles Edward Handy At the age of 72, Charles Edward Handy passed away peacefully into the arms of our Heavenly Father on June 28, 2012, with family at his bedside. Charles was born on September 19, 1939, in Jennings, Louisiana. Charles, son of the late Sedonia Thierry Handy and Arthur Lee Handy, is survived by his beloved wife of 16 years, Cathy Patterson Handy; loving daughters, Monique Handy-Jones (Azar) and Monica Handy Crawford (George); adored brother, Arthur Lee Handy, Jr. (Jacqueline); cherished grandchildren, Taylor Renée Jones, George Ryan Crawford and Charles Ethan Crawford. He will be missed by his father-in-law, Samuel Key; sister-in-laws, Eulanda Kay Jones and Linda Brooks (Willie); brother-in-laws, Samuel Floyd Smith (Ethel) and Gary Darnell Smith (Brenda) ; nephew and godson Jonathan Lee Handy, and a host of other relatives. Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Smith Handy; sister-in-law Vicki Jo DeHorney (Robert); brother-in-law, John Jones; mother-in-laws, Martha Adams Key and Alma Randall Smith; and father-in-law, Samuel Floyd Smith. Charles graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1963. While at Southern University, he was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and later became a lifetime member. Immediately following graduation, he moved to San Francisco and began his career with the Department of Defense at the Hunter's Point U.S. Naval Shipyard in 1963. He retired 34 years later in 1996. During his profession, he was a highly awarded Program Manager, and received outstanding performance appraisals each year. Charles also earned Masters Degrees in Civil Engineering and Naval Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. A devout Catholic, Charles established his family at St. Michael's Parish in the 1960's where he developed rich, lifelong friendships. He later moved to St. Elizabeth's Parish and was initiated into the Knights of St. Peter Claver. Above all, Charles loved his family and friends and treasured every relationship. He never forgot a face and possessed the unique ability to make all those he knew feel deeply cherished. He enjoyed cooking, dancing, Zydeco music, football, storytelling, and working on cars. Charles will forever be missed for his kindness, wit, enthusiastic personality and infectious smile. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 2151, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38101-2151, or charities of your choice. Friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, July 2nd 2012 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 459 Somerset St., San Francisco, CA. Quiet hour begins at 10am, Rosary and Funeral Mass at 10:45AM, committal service and interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma. Repast to be held at family home immediately following services.
