Mrs. Encarnacion J. Addad

Encarnacion Javier Addad - January 19, 1925 to October 16, 2015 Encarnacion Javier Addad passed away peacefully in her home on October 16, 2015 at 8:30 am. She was 90 years old and had been under hospice care since June 1 of this year. She was an adventurous woman, barely 20, when she left home in 1945 to begin her health care career as a civilian employee working at the Victoria Luna Hospital in Tagudin, Illocos Sur, one of the base hospitals for the U.S. Armed Forces campaign in the Philippines. With a high school diploma and only a year and a half of college, she taught herself how to type, developed her office skills, and soon became a valued administrative employee at the base. When the war was winding down, her former Chief Nurse moved on to another hospital in Manila and suggested that mom follow her. With a simple letter of recommendation written to the base commander, mom was offered a new position, soon acquiring the same respect and admiration as with her previous job. It was at this point that she met Antonio Rosendo Addad. Despite her family’s concerns, they married in 1950. She followed Antonio to San Francisco, and they remained married for 38 years until his death in 1988. Theirs was a relationship of contrasts. He was unruly, she was intentional; he was traditional, she was progressive. Where he was satisfied with a simple life and long established friends, she was a joiner and strove to meet new and different people. They complemented and contrasted each other in many ways. Using her military experience as a foundation, Encarnacion Addad enrolled in a Bay Area training program and became a medical assistant in 1959. She acquired a position with a doctor in general practice in a private office, and remained a dedicated employee for almost 30 years until she chose to retire when the practice closed. After Antonio’s death, Encarnacion maintained her independence, caring for her house and garden, volunteering at her parish church, hosting parties in her home, assisting in the care of her granddaughter, and remaining a loving and devoted mother to her sons and their wives. Because of these, she will be greatly missed. Encarnacion Javier Addad was the youngest of seven siblings born to Demetrio Javier and Beatriz Cariaga in Laoag, Illocos Norte, Philippines. She is survived by sons Roland Addad and Ron Addad, and Roland’s wife Julie Wu-Addad, and their daughter Nicole Martine Addad; and Ron’s wife Deborah Goodman Addad. She also leaves behind numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces, and their families in the Philippines and the United States. Her extended family of Javiers remembers her as caring, feisty, active, and independent. The family owes a debt of gratitude to the executive staff and caregivers of Medical Care Professionals of South San Francisco, whose continued diligence and gentle support provided Encarnacion with the home care she needed during these past several months. Without them, and the expertise of the Sutter Health Care at Home team, the family would not have been as successful in fulfilling all of Encarnacion’s wishes.
