Carlo Umberto Nocito 1937 ? 2012 Carlo Umberto Nocito passed away in the arms of his loving wife Filomena on March 14, 2012, in San Francisco, California. He is survived by his wife Filomena; son, Flavio; sister, Pasqualina; and his brother, Giuseppe. Carlo joined the world on October 28, 1937, in the southern Italian town of Verbicaro, Cosenza, Calabria. He was the youngest of three children born to Giulio Nocito and Maria Russo. As a young boy he was enthralled with his Uncle Francesco?s craft of shoe making. He took up an apprenticeship in Uncle Francesco?s shop, which instilled in him a lifelong passion for the craft. He first moved to San Francisco in November of 1962, where he began working as a shoemaker at the Presidio military base. In August of1969, while on a visit to his hometown, he met Filomena Dito, whom he married on January 13, 1970, in Verbicaro. In July 1970, Carlo and Filomena began their life together in San Francisco. Carlo first worked at Frank?s Shoe Repair on Polk Street from 1965 to 1985. On December 26, 1985, their beloved son Flavio was born. In 1987, Carlo and Filomena opened their business, Carlo Nocito Italian Shoe Repair, at 1505 Vallejo and Polk ? just a block down from their home on the corner of Vallejo and Larkin. He worked and lived on those two blocks for the remainder of his life, becoming a respected and admired figure in the Russian Hill neighborhood. Carlo is remembered by those honored to have known him as a loving, selfless, and gentle soul. He took great pride in his roles as a husband and father, and in his incredible work ethic and accomplishments in America. His love for his business and family was the driving force behind all his success. Carlo took great pride in his shop, which he insisted carry his full name in its title; he worked there tirelessly until just a few months before his passing. His wife Filomena and son Flavio will fondly remember Carlo?s cheerful disposition, optimistic outlook, and valuable advice about the importance of respecting others. His cheerfulness and optimism sustained him and lifted the spirits of those around him during his long illness. Carlo always remained positive ? often comforting those who cared for him with his familiar reassuring phrase ?I am fine.? He will undoubtedly be remembered as an exemplary human being. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday after 1:00PM and are invited to attend the Funeral Mass also on Thursday at 2:00PM, all at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, 666 Filbert St, SF. In accordance with his dying wishes, Carlo will be entombed alongside his parents Giulio Nocito and Maria Russo in Verbicaro.
