John DeMicheli

John DeMicheli Beloved husband, uncle, and lifelong San Franciscan John DeMicheli passed away on July 31, 2012 with his family by his side. Born on October 13, 1921 in North Beach, John was the fourth and only American-born child of Angelo De Micheli and Caterina De Galiazzi, immigrants from Varese, Lombardia, Italy. The De Micheli family moved to Potrero Hill in 1933, where John spent the rest of his life. He attended Saints Peter and Paul Salesian School in North Beach, and then Patrick Henry Elementary School, Daniel Webster Elementary School, and Mission High School, from which he graduated in 1940. A member of the Eighth Air Force during World War II, John was stationed in England on D-Day and was present when the Germans first sent buzz bombs over England. After returning from the war, John went into business with his brother Pierre to open an Italian-American pastry shop. A couple of years later, he left to work at PG&E, where he retired after 35 years of service. John married the love of his life, fellow Potrero Hill resident Olympia "Ollie" Meneghetti, on August 22, 1948 at St. Theresa's Church on Potrero Hill. For the next 64 years, John and Ollie were inseparable, traveling together, attending social and athletic events together, and hosting countless parties for their many friends and large extended family. John was an avid Bay Area sports fan. A member of the 49er Faithful, he and Ollie held 49er season tickets for years, and enjoyed many pregame tailgates and away game road trips with their friends. John had also been a Giants fan since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958. He had many hobbies. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, and performing tricks as an amateur magician for children in his neighborhood. He inherited his family's passion for cooking, and was well-known for his olives, vinegar, cherries jubilee, pizza, and limoncello. John was a devout Catholic, and very proud of his Italian ancestry. He attended mass every Sunday, (and, later, every morning), and prayed every day. He was a member of the Young at Heart Senior Club, the Italian Catholic Federation (Branch No. 1), and the Verdi Club. John was preceded in death by his siblings Pierina Baldaccini, Teresa Bollini, and Pierre DeMicheli. He is survived by his wife Ollie, his nephew Richard and his wife Sandra, his great-nephew Richard Jr. and his wife Cindy, his great-nephew Christopher and his wife Stephanie, great-great-nephews Richard III and William, great-great-niece Amelia, his sister-in-law Eleanor Berto, his brother-in-law David Berto, a large extended family in Sonoma and throughout the Bay Area, and his "adopted" family of Lloyd and Margaret Miglio and all their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, August 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Valente Marini Perata & Co. (4840 Mission St.). A funeral mass will take place on Friday, August 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Chapel (3255 Folsom St.), with interment to follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. John's family wishes to thank the Sutter Home Hospice for all their care, and especially Mary Taulahi, his devoted caregiver.
