Josephine Jovel

Josephine Eva Menjivar de Jovel Josephine Eva Menjivar de Jovel (?Fina?) passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family members on March 22, 2012, in San Francisco, CA, at the age of 89. Fina was born in Sonsonate, El Salvador on December 19, 1922, to Angel and Ernestina Menjivar. She arrived in San Francisco at the age of nineteen. In 1943, Fina met her beloved, Mario Ernesto Jovel, in San Francisco, and they married on August 17, 1946. Mario and Fina enjoyed 56 years together, until Mario passed away in 2002. Fina had several occupations during her lifetime, including iron and sheet metal work in the shipyards during World War II. Later she worked as a seamstress at Levi Strauss, making jeans for over 15 years, and at Schlage locks until she retired. Her favorite occupation, however, was being a proud mother and grandmother. Fina was an avid cook, and was always known to have something delicious on the stove or in the oven for church and family events, and at home. Along with her husband, Mario, Fina was an avid promoter of the Grupo Hispano, and a founding member of Cursillo-Hispano group at the Church of the Epiphany, where she regularly attended church events. Fina?s other passions included visiting and enjoying her time at the casinos where she was known as ?Lucky Lady.? Fina was also an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers and international soccer. Fina is survived by her sisters, Letty Menjivar de Quehl, Carmen Menjivar de Guerra, and Angela Menjivar-Scott, her children, Armando Caseras, Anna (Claire Marie), Mario José (Laura Clark), and Ruth (Deb Beck), her adored granddaughter, Bianca Miyazaki-Jovel. She became the dear grandmother to Tristan, Jonathan, and Benjamin. Fina is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Dora Menjivar and brothers, Jose Guillermo ?Chepe? Menjivar, and Rogelito Menjivar. Friends are invited to visit on Monday, March 26, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., at the chapels of Valente Marini Perata & Co., at 4840 Mission Street, San Francisco, and then beginning at 5:00PM at Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna Avenue, San Francisco, CA, followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. A Christian Burial will be celebrated on March 27, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna Avenue, San Francisco, CA. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA. Fina will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will remain forever in our hearts and memories.
