January 1, 1924 – January 9, 2013 Josephine passed away peacefully in San Francisco on January 9, 2013. Josephine—who was always called “Beppa” by her large extended family and many friends--was born in San Francisco on the first day of 1924. She was a true North Beach girl, daughter of the late Lena and Giovanni Chiarenza, an Italian fisherman. She attended Francisco Junior High and Galileo High School. She met Tommy Ternullo, the love of her life, while living at the corner of Hyde and North Point streets. They were long time sweethearts, and married at Sts Peter and Paul Church on August 8, 1943. It was wartime, and Tommy served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. They lived for many years in Tiburon. Tommy passed away in 2005. Josephine was as beautiful as she was generous, she loved and cared for her family all of her life. Nothing made her happier than to bake her famous biscotti cookies around the holidays, or cook an Italian family dinner of pasta and meatballs. She is survived by her her brother, Mel Chiarenza, by her sister, Mary Chiarenza, and by four nieces, Darlene Plumtree (Carl Nolte), Karen Christen, Jackie Sheldon and Cristina Holloway (Jon), and by two nephews, John Gilmore and Ken Chiarenza, four great nieces and four great nephews, as well as three great-great nephews and one great-great niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy, her brother, Rosario Chiarenza, and her sister, Grace Christen.
